Being active in nature has an undeniable magic, but exploring Northern Italy from the saddle of a bicycle is an entirely new experience. When you exchange the speed of a car for the slower rhythm of a bike, the landscape opens up in all its beauty. You begin to notice the scent of wild herbs, the shifting palette of green across the hills, and the gentle breeze carrying whispers of centuries past.

This region is interconnected by the famous Ciclovia Alpe Adria (CAAR)—a crown jewel among European cycle routes that leads from Alpine peaks all the way to the sunlit Adriatic coast. Yet, you don't need to cover hundreds of kilometers to feel its charm. Starting in the historic town of Cividale del Friuli, our route traces the ancient Roman road Via Iulia Augusta, weaving together UNESCO world heritage, rolling vineyards, and unforgettable Italian flavors.
From Vineyards to the Sea
Leaving Cividale, the road gently rolls through sun-kissed vineyards surrounding the historic estate of Rocca Bernarda and the peaceful Abbazia di Rosazzo. Every kilometer is steeped in history, the scent of olive groves, and exceptional local cuisine. Brief stops at traditional agriturismos for an espresso, a glass of Friulano, or fresh prosciutto complement this serene pace perfectly.
Continuing south, the journey leads through the unique star-shaped fortress city of Palmanova and past the ancient Roman mosaics of Aquileia. And the ultimate reward? Crossing the long causeway over the lagoon to arrive in Grado, where the inland hills finally yield to the endless blue horizon of the sea.

The Watercolor Series: Friuli Horizons
The moment I returned home to our Italian house from the cycle route, I picked up my brushes immediately—eager to paint while the vivid imagery of the journey was still fresh in my mind. The shifting light over the
vineyards, the soft mist resting in the valleys, and the gentle gradient where the earth meets the sky inspired me to create a new series of watercolor paintings titled

Friuli Horizons.
These watercolors capture that exact feeling of freedom, the soft color palette, and the open space experienced along the way—bringing a piece of this tranquil Italian landscape straight onto the paper.
